These ointments can be used on and around open wounds. They should not be applied directly on wounds that may be sutured. Most are not as toxic to healing tissue as fly sprays are. That said, they may impede healing of wounds in later stages of healing and should not be rubbed into sutured wounds as they can disrupt skin to skin healing.

Some fly repellent ointments can be used safely around the eyes to reduce fly irritation, in cases in which fly masks are not practical. Always use ointments very sparingly around the eye. The medications may melt over time and may run into the eye. In some cases this can be irritating and could even worsen eye conditions.
