Stallion Not Producing Foals, Possibly Infertile

Summary

This is most common in pasture breeding situations. A stallion is put out with a group of mares, and few or no foals are produced. It brings up the question of whether the stallion is fertile or not. The place to start in this situation is a breeding soundness examination of the stallion. Ideally, a stallion has a breeding soundness examination prior to the breeding season If he is normal, then the mares can be examined as well.

What To Do

Assess the stallion's general health and share your findings and concerns with your vet. Pay particular attention to his scrotum. Outline when the problem started, when the stallion last sired foals, if ever.

Your vet assesses your overall program. They typically would conduct a breeding soundness examination on the stallion.
Questions Your Vet Might Ask:
  • Has the stallion ever been bred before?
  • Has the stallion sired foals in the past? When?
  • How old is the stallion?
  • Do you see the stallion actually breed (cover) the mares?
  • Has the stallion had a breeding soundness evaluation?
