Summary

The name Vetrap® has become synonymous with cohesive bandage in veterinary medicine, but there are many other brands. Cohesive means that it adheres to itself without adhering to other materials, like skin or hair.

Veterinary cohesive bandages mostly are of moderate stretchability. I prefer to use this tape over adequate padding material, although some use it directly on the skin. Cohesive bandages come in different widths.

The most useful in my experience for horses is 4" width. Keep a minimum of 4 rolls of Vetrap® or other cohesive bandage in your emergency kit.

Cohesive bandages do not adhere to the hair and so will slip down or up and can become "corded" and cause excessive focal pressure to important structures like tendons.

When using any bandage material, it is important to know correct application technique. Poor bandaging can be harmful and is worse than no bandaging at all.
