Summary
This is a prescription drug, only to be dispensed by a licensed veterinarian. Only use this medication as directed by your veterinarian.
Firocoxib is a newer generation NSAID (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) that is considered safer for horses than the traditional medications phenylbutazone and flunixin meglumine. Advantages of firocoxib include once daily dosing and improved safety.
It is used mostly for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain but is suitable for many inflammatory conditions. It is especially useful for long-term management of inflammation and pain from chronic conditions. I use it extensively in older horses, many of whom are kept on it for life. It has also been used effectively for management of eye inflammation.
