Other Animals Picking at Wound
Summary
Occasionally, either other horses or other animals, particularly birds, will pick at a healing wound, causing it to enlarge or delay healing. This is particularly a problem in pastured horses, and those kept in a herd. I have seen Magpies (Crow-like birds) pick at and re-open wounds, especially on the back but also on the limbs. I have also seen this happen when horses were stabled with chickens. I have also seen other horses in a herd bite at and re-open wounds.
Take action to stop this destructive process. Move the horse to a different location, remove the horse from the herd, or talk to your vet about other options to protect the wound.
