Hypocalcemic Tetany

Synonyms: Lactation, Transport, or Idiopathic Tetany, Eclampsia

This is a rare condition in horses that is caused by an acute depletion of calcium. It causes a high fever and painful muscle cramping and contractions.

This condition occurs in lactating mares (Lactation Tetany), or after prolonged exercise or travel (Transport Tetany).

Ensure that your horse's diet contains well-balanced ratios of calcium and phosphate. During lactation or travel, always provide adequate feed and avoid fasting. After prolonged exercise such as an endurance ride, always provide your horse with an adequate water source and electrolytes.
