Bucked Shins, Pain Response to Pressure over Front of Cannon Bones in Race Horse

Summary

Pain to pressure over the front of the cannon bones of the forelimbs is commonly found in racehorses, and is classically related to dorsal metacarpal disease (bucked shins). This problem usually occurs in both front cannon bones. In rare cases, direct trauma to this area can cause similar signs.

What To Do

Assess your horse's general health using the Whole Horse Exam (WHE), paying particular attention to their pain response when pressure is placed in this area, feel for heat and look for swelling. Assess for lameness at walk and trot. Share your findings and concerns with your vet.

Your vet uses lameness exam and direct assessment of the area to better understand the problem. X-ray and other diagnostics are also commonly used.
Questions Your Vet Might Ask:
  • Do you notice any lameness?
  • How old is the horse?
  • When did you first notice this?
  • What training program is the horse on?
  • Do you notice swelling in the area?
  • When was the horse last worked?
  • When was the last time the horse performed to your expectations, or has he ever?
  • Do you think this condition affects the horse's performance?
