Observation
What you see. The starting point for addressing any equine health related issue is your observation.

YOU ARE OBSERVING

Pregnancy Loss, Early (Conception to 6 Weeks)

Summary

The first 45 days is the most common time period for pregnancy loss in mares. Mares resorb early pregnancies so there are usually no visible or obvious signs.

You will know that your mare has lost an early pregnancy if she returns to heat after she has been confirmed in foal by ultrasound exam, or she is not pregnant on a follow-up ultrasound. However, in some mares there will be a delay in return to heat after the loss of a pregnancy, because the uterus still "thinks" that the mare is pregnant, so heat is suppressed.

What To Do

Recognize that the mare may have an underlying reproductive problem that caused early embryonic death. Your choice will be to simply rebreed your mare, or have your vet perform diagnostic work to determine the cause of the loss and/or ensure that she is ready to rebreed.

your vet's role

Your vet uses rectal palpation and ultrasound of the reproductive tract as a foundation, and other diagnostics as needed in order to understand the cause of pregnancy loss and to prevent it in the future.
Questions Your Vet Might Ask:
  • How old is the mare?
  • What is the mare's reproductive history?
  • What was the mare's breeding dates?
  • Was the mare confirmed in foal by a vet?
