Summary
A hoof poultice is a soft medicated mass of material that is used to reduce inflammation, soften the affected area, and help "draw out" pus from abscesses and infections.
After the affected area is cleaned, examined, and initially treated, a poultice is applied to the hoof and held in place with a supporting bandage, baby diaper, or duct tape. The poultice may or may not be replaced when the area is reexamined later depending upon the vet's judgment.
Hoof poultices are commercially available in pads, but can also be created by hand, the common ingredients being ichthammol, Epsom salts, or sugardine (sugar and Betadine or Iodine).
Poultices are sometimes preferred over soaking a hoof, which can cause the hoof wall to become too soft and weaken. Your vet may choose to use a poultice for a variety of injuries and conditions.
