Summary

There are a variety of prescription steroid containing ointments and sprays available to us as vets. We prescribe these as needed. You can buy some mild steroid creams over the counter and keep one in your kit.

A 1% hydrocortisone cream is a mild, over-the-counter topical steroid useful for calming localized skin irritation — girth galls, insect bites and stings, and minor allergic or contact dermatitis. It reduces the itching, redness, and inflammation that drive a horse to rub or chew at an area and make it worse.

Use it only on intact or minimally broken skin. Do not apply a steroid ointment to open, deep, or infected wounds, or to skin you suspect is infected with bacteria or fungus: steroids suppress the local immune response and can slow healing or allow an infection to spread. As with any topical, do not apply ointment to a significant wound before your veterinarian has examined it and decided on a plan. Apply a thin layer, short-term; if the problem is not improving within a few days, or is spreading, stop and consult your vet.
