Shedding Haircoat Inappropriately, Losing Coat Out of Season

Summary

SUMMARY
Horses normally shed their coat twice a year, in spring and fall, on a schedule set mostly by day length and to a lesser degree by temperature. When a horse sheds heavily at the wrong time of year, sheds in patches, drops its coat weeks after a fever or illness, or seems to be shedding constantly, something has disturbed that schedule. This is different from a horse that fails to shed its winter coat in spring (see the record on that observation). Here the horse is losing coat when it should be holding it. Some causes are harmless: a horse moved from a cold climate to a warm one, a horse suddenly kept under barn lights, an unusually warm stretch in midwinter, or a mare in late pregnancy or early lactation. Others matter. Cushing's disease (PPID) disrupts the shedding cycle and often shows up first as patchy or out-of-season shedding long before the classic long curly coat. A high fever or serious illness a month or two earlier can cause the coat to let go all at once as the hair follicles reset. Poor nutrition, heavy parasite load, and chronic disease weaken the coat. Chronic selenium poisoning from high-selenium forage or over-supplementation causes loss of mane and tail hair and sometimes body hair, along with hoof problems. Skin parasites and infections (lice, rain rot, ringworm) can also look like abnormal shedding, but those usually come with itching, crusts, or clearly defined bare patches, and belong under the hair loss records rather than this one.

What To Do

Look closely at what is actually happening. Run your fingers against the grain of the coat over the whole horse. Is hair coming out evenly everywhere, or in patches? Is the skin underneath normal, or scaly, crusted, thickened, or sore? Is the horse itchy or rubbing? Check the mane and tail. Look for lice at the base of the hair along the topline and under the mane. Then step back and think about the last two months. Any fever, illness, or hard stress? Any change in feed, supplements, hay source, or pasture? Any move, change in blanketing, or barn lighting? Perform the Whole Horse Exam, paying attention to weight, muscle over the topline, and the feet, since PPID and selenium toxicity both affect the feet. Take a temperature. Photograph the horse and note the date so you and your vet can track it. Then contact your vet with your findings.

What Not To Do

Do not assume out-of-season shedding is normal in an older horse. It is one of the earliest and most overlooked signs of Cushing's disease, and untreated PPID leads to laminitis. Do not add a selenium supplement, "coat supplement," or vitamin product without talking to your vet, since too much selenium is one of the causes. Do not clip or blanket the horse to hide the problem before your vet has seen it. Do not treat with medicated shampoos or antiparasitic products before knowing what you are treating.

Your vet will take a careful history, because the history usually points to the answer here. They will examine the whole horse, not just the skin, and pay attention to body condition, muscle, feet, and other signs of Cushing's disease. In older horses they will usually recommend blood testing for PPID. Depending on findings, they may run blood work to look for underlying illness, do a skin scraping or pull hairs to rule out parasites and fungal infection, and review the diet and any supplements. If selenium toxicity is a possibility, they may test blood, hair, or feed. In many cases the answer is a benign change in environment and the coat sorts itself out with the next season, but that is a conclusion your vet should reach after ruling out the important causes, not a starting assumption.
