Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Carpal Canal Tenosynovitis

Summary

Swelling of the carpal canal usually means that one of the flexor tendons that runs through it has been injured or that one of the structures within or associated with the canal have been injured. The carpal canal can also become infected either through the blood, a wound or an injection.

Inflammation and thickening of the canal may result from another underlying disease process. Then, in and of itself can be a source of ongoing pain and lameness. Compression by the flexor retinaculum, a band of connective tissue at the back of the canal can cause pain and irritation. In some cases, the choice is made to cut it.
