Summary

Hemostatic gauze is wound gauze impregnated with an agent that dramatically speeds blood clotting. It is intended for serious, briskly bleeding wounds that are not controlled by direct pressure alone. I prefer the chitosan-based products (such as Celox®) over kaolin-based products (such as QuikClot®), because chitosan works without generating heat — some kaolin products produce an exothermic reaction that can burn tissue.
To use it, pack or press the gauze directly onto or into the bleeding site and hold firm, direct pressure over it. The gauze does not replace pressure — the two work together. This is an emergency, stop-gap tool to control hemorrhage and buy time until your veterinarian arrives or you reach a clinic, and it is especially valuable in a trailer or backcountry kit where help may be far away. Once bleeding is controlled, leave assessment and definitive treatment of any serious wound to your vet.
