Summary

A watch or clock with a second hand makes it easier than a digital readout to follow along when you are counting heart rate, pulse, and respiratory rate. You watch the sweep of the second hand while you count, rather than glancing back and forth at changing digits.
For a trailer, trail, or backcountry kit, a solar-powered watch with a second hand (or a simple solar sport watch with a built-in timer) is the better choice. There is no battery to die on a pack trip, and it recharges in ordinary daylight. At home most people simply use the timer on their phone — but in the backcountry, where you may be rationing phone battery or have no signal, a dedicated solar watch is reliable and always ready. An inexpensive solar model (for example, a basic Casio) is more than adequate; you do not need anything sophisticated.
