Summary

Bleach is an excellent all-purpose disinfectant. The key to its effectiveness, however, is that it does not kill organisms in the presence of organic material (debris like manure or bedding). This is true for many disinfectants.

So when using bleach, all visible material must be removed first, then bleach or other disinfectant can be applied to the surface. Dilute bleach (1:10) can then be left in contact with the surface for a minimum of 10 minutes.

Bleach can also been used at very low concentrations (6-8 drops per liter of water) to kill bacteria in water without causing harm to those drinking it. Horse people sometimes add bleach to water in water troughs. Because of the taste and smell though, horses may drink less chlorinated water, and this can cause other problems like large colon impaction.
